This cookie policy explains how the La Petite Nuit online store, operated by Kyronix Labs LLC, uses cookies and similar tracking technologies when you visit our site and place an order on it. It describes what these technologies are, why we use them, and the choices you have to accept, refuse or configure them at any time.
This policy complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the so-called “ePrivacy” directive and the guidelines and recommendations of the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL). It supplements our privacy policy, which describes more generally how your personal data is processed.
1. What is a cookie (and similar trackers)?
A cookie is a small text file placed and stored on your device (computer, tablet, phone) by the browser you use when you visit a website. It allows the site to recognize your device, to remember certain information about your browsing and to offer you a continuous and secure experience, for example by keeping the contents of your cart from one page to the next.
The term “cookie” is used here in a broad sense. It also covers so-called “similar” trackers, which serve comparable purposes without necessarily taking the form of a traditional file. These include, for example, the browser’s local storage technologies (such as local storage and session storage), invisible pixels (also called “tracking pixels” or web beacons), and identifiers stored on the device. In the rest of this document, the word “cookie” refers to all of these technologies.
A distinction is generally made between first-party cookies, placed by the site you are visiting, and third-party cookies, placed by other organizations through that site. A distinction is also made between session cookies, which disappear when you close the browser, and persistent cookies, which remain stored on your device for a set period or until you delete them.
2. Why we use cookies
We use cookies to make our store work properly and to improve your shopping experience. Depending on their nature, these cookies serve several purposes, which we describe below.
- Enabling the essential functioning of the site, in particular remembering your cart, keeping your browsing session active and making sure payment goes smoothly.
- Ensuring the security of browsing and payment, in particular protection against fraud and unauthorized access attempts during checkout.
- Remembering your preferences so you don’t have to enter them again on each visit, for example certain display choices.
- Measuring the site’s audience and understanding, statistically, how it is used, in order to keep improving it.
- Where applicable, measuring the effectiveness of our communication campaigns and adapting our messages, when you have consented to it.
3. The categories of cookies we use
The cookies placed on our site fall into four main categories. Only strictly necessary cookies are placed without obtaining your prior consent. All the other categories are only activated after you have made your choice.
Strictly necessary cookies
These cookies are essential for the site to work and to provide the service you request. They cannot be disabled, because without them the store could not work, in particular for placing an order. They do not require your consent, in accordance with the regulations. For example, they are used to:
- keep the contents of your cart from one page to the next;
- keep your browsing session active during your visit;
- secure checkout and the payment of your order;
- detect and prevent fraudulent activity or abnormal behaviour during payment;
- remember, where the law requires it, the status of your cookie choices so as not to ask you again on every page.
Audience measurement cookies (statistics)
These cookies help us understand how visitors use the site, in an aggregated and statistical way: most viewed pages, browsing paths, difficulties encountered. They allow us to improve the usability and content of the store. They are only placed with your consent. For example, they are used to:
- count the number of visitors and page views;
- know where visitors to the site come from;
- measure the performance of the different pages and identify what needs improving;
- compile traffic statistics, without trying to identify you personally.
Refusing these cookies has no effect on your ability to browse and order: you can perfectly well place an order without accepting them.
Functional cookies
These cookies make your browsing more comfortable by remembering choices and preferences, beyond what is strictly necessary. They are only placed with your consent. For example, they are used to:
- keep certain display preferences;
- remember information you have entered so you don’t have to enter it again;
- adapt certain elements of the interface to the way you use it, to make your journey smoother.
Marketing cookies
These cookies may be used to measure the effectiveness of our communications and, where applicable, to offer you content suited to your interests. They are only placed with your consent. For example, they are used to:
- measure the effectiveness of our communication campaigns;
- limit the number of times the same message is shown to you and adapt our messages;
- understand, in aggregate, the actions that lead to a visit or an order.
If we are not running any communication campaign that requires such cookies, this category remains inactive on the site.
4. Cookies placed by Shopify (store and payment)
Our store and our payment system run on the Shopify platform. As such, cookies are placed by Shopify to make the store work, manage the cart and secure payment. The vast majority of these cookies are strictly necessary: they are essential for you to add items to your cart, go to checkout and pay for your order securely. These cookies include, for example:
- a cart cookie (for example cart), which remembers the items you have added;
- checkout session and security cookies (for example _secure_session_id), which secure the payment step;
- technical platform cookies (prefixed with _shopify_), used for the proper functioning of the store and, where applicable, for internal statistics;
- cookies used to prevent fraud and ensure the integrity of the order.
Depending on your configuration and your choices, Shopify may also place cookies for audience measurement or other purposes that require consent. These cookies are then only activated after your agreement has been obtained. To learn more about Shopify’s role in processing your data, you can consult our privacy policy.
5. Third-party cookies
Some cookies may be placed by third parties, that is, organizations other than La Petite Nuit, through our site. This is the case in particular for the technical providers that host and run the store and payment, and, where applicable, for audience measurement or communication tools we may use.
These third parties may place their own cookies and access them when you browse our site, in accordance with their own policies. Third-party cookies that require consent are only placed after your agreement has been obtained. We strive to limit the use of third-party cookies to what is strictly necessary and to favour privacy-friendly solutions.
6. How long cookies are kept
The lifespan of a cookie varies depending on its nature and purpose. Some cookies expire as soon as you close your browser; others remain stored on your device for a set period. In accordance with the recommendations of the CNIL:
- session cookies, such as those that keep your cart or your session, are deleted at the end of your visit or shortly afterwards;
- the consent you give regarding cookies is kept for a maximum of six months, so that your choice is remembered without asking you on every visit;
- cookies that require consent, in particular audience measurement cookies, have a lifespan of no more than thirteen months, and the information collected through them is not kept for more than twenty-five months;
- at the end of these periods, your consent is requested again and the cookies concerned are, where applicable, placed again.
You can delete cookies already placed at any time through your browser settings, as explained below.
7. Your consent
With the exception of cookies strictly necessary for the site to work, no cookie is placed on your device without your prior consent. On your first visit, an information notice lets you accept or refuse, by category, the placement of cookies that require consent. Refusing is as easy as accepting.
Your consent is free, specific, informed and unambiguous. As long as you have not made a choice, or if you refuse, only strictly necessary cookies are used. You can change your mind and withdraw your consent at any time, as easily as you gave it, by changing your preferences or by deleting cookies from your browser. Withdrawing your consent does not affect the lawfulness of cookies placed before the withdrawal.
8. How to manage or refuse cookies
You have several ways to control cookies. First, you can express your choices using the cookie management tool shown on the site. You can also configure your browser to accept, refuse or delete cookies. Each browser offers its own settings, usually available from its help or settings menu:
- Google Chrome: “Settings” menu, then “Privacy and security”, then “Cookies and other site data”.
- Mozilla Firefox: “Settings” menu, then “Privacy & Security”, under “Cookies and Site Data”.
- Apple Safari: “Settings” or “Preferences” menu, then the “Privacy” tab.
- Microsoft Edge: “Settings” menu, then “Cookies and site permissions”.
Please note that blocking all cookies, including strictly necessary cookies, may prevent the store from working properly and stop you from placing an order. However, refusing audience measurement, functional or marketing cookies in no way prevents you from browsing the site or completing a purchase.
9. Link with the privacy policy
Cookies may lead to the processing of personal data. This cookie policy focuses on tracking technologies and the choices related to them. For complete information on the nature of the data processed, the purposes pursued, the recipients, the retention periods and the rights you have (right of access, rectification, erasure, objection, etc.), we invite you to consult our privacy policy. The legal information about the site’s publisher is set out in our legal notice.
10. Changes to the cookie policy
We may need to change this cookie policy, in particular to take into account technical or regulatory changes or changes in the tools we use. Any change takes effect as soon as it is published on this page. The date of the last update, shown at the top of this document, lets you know when the current version was drawn up. We invite you to check this page regularly to stay informed about how we use cookies.
